ADC Young Guns

The Boundaries of Creative Disciplines

The ADC is very competitive. Young Guns had 40 winners last year and there can be as many as 100. Their logo represents honor as combative, like a wild game trophy on the wall.

The New York Times, YBWA\Chiat\Day, New York Magazine, KesselsKramer, Futurebrand, Wieden+Kennedy, MediaTemple.

Art Directors develop design concepts and review material that is to appear in printed, digital, broadcast, or web-based media - really any visual media. They decide how best to visually present information so that it is eye catching, appealing, organized, and effective. Art Directors decide which photographs or images to use, and they oversee the layout, design and production of the material. In many cases, the AD oversees a team of those doing the actual artwork, layout design, or copywriting. They direct the choice and production of all creative elements.

The difference between an Art Director and a designer is that the AD comes up with a concept or vision, and the designer actually produces that vision. Lots of times an Art Director is also a designer, but on a big job they are usually different people.

For Young Guns, anyone age 30 and under working creatively (advertising, publishing, graphic design, illustration, photography, film and video, packaging and environmental design, experimental fashion, interactive media, etc) may enter. You don't have to identify yourself as an Art Director for this competition.

If you are a potential ADC Young Gun, you are probably doing work in more than one area. You are judged on a body of work (up to 10 pieces), all for one fee of $150. There is a late fee of $10/piece after the February 1 deadline.
